Waste diversion signage

Posted on November 28, 2010 in Canada Games, interpretation, recent work

‘Waste diversion’ is the industry term for garbage signs. For the Halifax 2011 Canada Games, we created unique waste diversion signage to be used in all of our venues.

Since the 2011 Games actually take place across the province—and different municipalities have different rules for waste sorting—it was decided to create a generic set of signs (and rules) which work for all municipalities without getting too specific.

I worked with the Environmental Education Officer for the Halifax Regional Municipality on the design and development of the individual icons and the signs as a whole. We put a lot of work into this and a decent amount of testing, so I’m hoping they will be successful! The true test is to see how much compliance we get from the public once they are rolled out.
